Day 21The Proverbs 31 Woman

Rest: The World Doesn't Depend on You

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Psalm 127:2

The woman of Proverbs 31 works hard, that's true — but work without rest isn't virtue, it's burnout. And God didn't call you to live exhausted. This psalm is an embrace for the tired woman: it does no good to rise before everyone and go to bed after everyone, "eating the bread of sorrows," because there are things only God gives, and He gives them while you sleep. There's a hidden arrogance in overwork — the idea that if you stop, everything will fall apart. But the world doesn't depend on you; it depends on God. Resting is an act of faith: it's saying, "I trust that You take care of what I let go of." The wise woman knows how to work and knows how to stop. Today, give yourself permission to rest without guilt. Sleep. Breathe. God is awake, taking care of everything while you recover your strength. You are loved even when you aren't producing.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to rest without guilt. Take from me the illusion that everything depends on me, and help me trust that You are caring for things while I sleep. Give rest to my body and to my soul. Amen.
