Day 259 — Closer to God — 365 Days
The Forgiveness That Sets You Free
“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:”
Matthew 6:14
Let's talk about something no one always says clearly: holding on to unforgiveness hurts you more than it hurts the person who wounded you. They're often living their life, unaware of the weight you're carrying.
Forgiveness isn't primarily for their sake. It's for yours.
It doesn't mean what they did to you was right. It doesn't mean you have to stay close to them. It doesn't mean it will stop hurting. It means letting go of the debt — not because it was paid, but because you no longer want to be the one collecting it.
When Jesus says the Father forgives those who forgive, He's revealing a deep spiritual connection: whoever lives with a heart closed to forgiveness ends up closed off, too, to receiving what they need.
Opening your hand and letting go is an act of faith. It's saying: God, I can't fix this. I'm handing it over. You take care of it.
It doesn't have to happen all at once. It can be one gesture a day. A prayer, an "I choose to forgive" even before you feel it. God honors that choice.
Prayer
Father, I choose to forgive [name silently in Your heart]. Not because it's easy, but because You forgave me. Let that forgiveness grow in me, slowly, and for real. Amen.
