After the Marriage Ended

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”

I saw every night you cried after the separation, trying to understand where it all went wrong. A marriage that ends carries a specific kind of pain: it's the grief of a dream you built together that didn't turn out the way you planned. Along with the sadness comes anger, and sometimes shame for not having been able to hold it together.

I'm not asking you to get back together with that person, if that isn't healthy or possible. I'm asking you not to carry this separation like an endless war, especially if there are children in the middle of it, who suffer twice over when their parents can't even speak to each other in peace.

The word I left says to live at peace with everyone, as far as it depends on you. That means you don't control the other person's reaction, but you do control your side. Let go of the script of who's more right. Choose the peace that's possible, even if a full reconciliation never happens.
